Upon a Water Lily
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do blow, and you might be kissed,
But they cannot embroider ere their kisses come.
From mercury on the tap,
To ice-cold water in the glass,
You will flow like an ever-fresh spring,
When we have outgrown our green and purple hue.
So long as men can see and fear,
So long lives this flower for evermore.
In fairest summer weather, when he comes
To give himself, or his youth, away,
The water will not hold him back;
He cannot stay, nor go away.
So long as we can see and fear,
So long is the dream for us.
For if we could but look behind,
And think that we are not there,
We should never grow old.
I know not what the flowers say,
But all the world does seem a little brighter,
A little happier, and a little freer.
