O, forsake not the sweet bird!
That sings so sweetly on the tree,
For in this nest her kindling eyes doth lie;
She that is naughty, and yet she is fair,
And all alone, ah, how sad it must be!
O, if thou canst not hear the song,
How canst thou know what love is?
For when thy soul hath left its native shore,
And wandered o’er lands unknown to thee,
It may be that thou wilt find a friend there,
Or else, ah, what shall become of thee?
Ah, let me but see her face,
If she do prove a true delight!
