Now, let’s talk about what happened inside the mountain stronghold. They killed two yellow cattle, ten sheep, and five pigs, loudly rejoicing with feasting. Among the leaders, when drinking, Cao Jia told all the events from beginning to end to Wang Lun and others. Wang Lun was stupefied for a while, hesitating within himself, unable to speak. He muttered to himself as they dined, and at the end, the leaders escorted Cao Jia and his companions to their guesthouse, where someone else took care of them. Cao Jia was pleased, saying to Wu Yong and the other six, “We have committed such great crimes that we cannot find a place to settle. If it were not for Brother Wang’s generous offer of help, all our lives would be lost! This debt of gratitude is inescapable!” Wu Yong just smiled. Cao Jia asked him, “Why are you just smiling? What can I do?” Wu Yong said, “Brother, you are too straightforward. Don’t you see that Wang Lun might be harboring some intentions for us? Look at his expressions and demeanours, observing whether there is any hidden plan.” Cao Jia asked, “How should one observe his expressions?” Wu Yong said, “If you don’t look at what happened during the meal yesterday, but instead consider what he said to Brother Cao when he first spoke to you, he did have a bit of warmth towards him. But later, after hearing about your killing many officials and the heroic acts of He Tao, Ruan Shengxiong, he changed color slightly, even though he pretended to respond, showing a lack of enthusiasm. If he intended to accept us in good faith, he should have decided the seating arrangement right then. Du Xiang, Song Wa, these are people who are not well-versed in courteous hospitality, so how could he possibly handle such matters? Only Lin Chong, the former Imperial Guard instructor, a man of high standing in the capital, is knowledgeable about all matters here. Now he has no choice but to sit fourth. Early on, seeing how Lin Chong looked at Brother Wang Lun and seemed somewhat discontented, constantly looking at him, and feeling his unease internally… I think he indeed has feelings of contempt for him, yet it was unavoidable. I’m only giving an idea here. Let him have a private quarrel among themselves.” Cao Jia replied, “All thanks to you, Master Wu’s clever plans for us, providing safe haven.” That night, seven of them rested comfortably.
